EP (Evoked Potentials) Test in Kirti Nagar
Advanced VEP, BERA, and SSEP Testing to Accurately Evaluate Visual, Auditory, and Sensory Nerve Pathways.
What is an Evoked Potentials (EP) Test?
An Evoked Potentials (EP) test measures the electrical activity in your brain in response to stimulation of specific sensory nerve pathways. While an EEG records continuous resting brain waves, an EP test records how quickly and completely nerve signals travel from your senses to your brain. During the procedure, small electrodes are attached to your scalp. Depending on your symptoms, the doctor will perform specific types of EP tests: VEP (Visual Evoked Potentials) involves watching a flashing checkerboard pattern to test the optic nerve; BERA or BAEP (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials) uses clicking sounds delivered through headphones to test hearing pathways; and SSEP (Somatosensory Evoked Potentials) uses mild electrical pulses on the wrists or ankles to test the spinal cord and brain. These tests are highly effective in diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis (MS), nerve damage, acoustic tumors, and optic neuritis.
EP Test: What We Evaluate
Our specialized evoked potential tests measure the speed of your nerve signals, helping neurologists detect lesions and diagnose specific conditions:
VEP (Visual Evoked Potentials)
Diagnosing optic nerve damage, vision loss, or optic neuritis by measuring how the brain responds to visual stimuli like flashing lights or patterns.
BERA / BAEP (Auditory)
Evaluating the hearing pathways to detect causes of hearing loss, acoustic neuromas (tumors), or nerve damage in the inner ear.
SSEP (Somatosensory)
Assessing nerve pathways in the spinal cord and brain to investigate numbness, weakness, or spinal cord injuries using mild electrical pulses.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
EP tests are a crucial diagnostic tool for identifying hidden nerve damage and detecting early signs of Multiple Sclerosis before symptoms become severe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Evoked Potentials (EP) test painful?
Generally, no. The VEP (visual) and BERA (auditory) tests are completely painless and only involve watching a screen or listening to sounds through headphones. The SSEP (sensory) test uses very mild electrical pulses, which might cause a slight tingling, twitching, or tapping sensation on your wrists or ankles, but it is not considered painful and is completely safe.
How do I prepare for my VEP, BERA, or SSEP test?
Please wash your hair with shampoo the night before or the morning of the test. Do NOT apply any hair oils, gels, or conditioners, as the technician needs a clean scalp to attach the electrodes. If your doctor has prescribed a VEP test, it is very important that you bring your prescription glasses or wear your contact lenses. You can eat and take your routine medications normally.
How long will the Evoked Potentials procedure take?
The duration depends heavily on which specific tests your doctor has ordered. A single test (like just a VEP or just a BERA) typically takes about 30 to 45 minutes, including the time to attach and remove the electrodes. If you are scheduled to have all three tests (VEP, BERA, and SSEP) during the same visit, the entire process can take up to two hours.
